Wildlife at Eland Lodge
John Coupland, Managing Director at Eland Lodge, has always had a fascination with biology and a passion for protecting the natural environment.
“As custodian of this glorious natural site, it is my privilege to be in a position where I can go some way to protecting our local wildlife and helping it flourish. The land at Eland Lodge is a source of constant pleasure – from hearing the owls call at night to watching the deer grazing, to catching a glimpse of something small scurrying through the undergrowth.
We here, like many of our farming colleagues, want to ensure that those experiences are available to the generations that follow and as we here at Eland have the ability to operate in that way without doing significant damage to our business, then that is a path I am determined to follow!”
Our “Wildlife at Eland Lodge” Blog Series follows some of the amazing wildlife that we are lucky enough to share the site with, and also looks at what we are doing to help protect their natural habitats.
Resident Wildlife:The Little Owl
Here at Eland Lodge we have been lucky enough to host a family of Little Owls for the last 16 years. Read our blog to find out more about Little Owls, their characteristics, what they bring to the site, and what we’re doing to protect this species
Resident Wildlife: The Fallow Deer
The Fallow Deer that roam the woods and pasture that sweep through the Eland site are probably the most impressive animals living with us! Read our blog to hear more about John’s encounter with a Fallow Deer fawn, stags tussling on the parkland, and how you might catch a glimpse of them when you visit.
Ground Nesting Birds vs. Hay Production
Farming vs. wildlife – it’s always been tricky to strike the right balance – weighing up the needs of a business against the need to protect the natural habitats of our native species. Read our blog to find out more about how at Eland Lodge we’ve taken the decision to help protect our ground nesting birds by adapting our hay production.
